The Energy Investment Company together with the Radio Liberty Has Commented on the Brown Coal Market

The Energy Investment Company has started cooperating with the Radio Liberty as a brown coal market expert. Starting September, the Energy Investment Company will take part in the Energy Freedom Program, which highlights issues of the fuel and energy complex of Ukraine, its development prospects, trends and news.
The first publication of a monthly review of the coal industry of Ukraine, which takes a look at the market of brown coal, contains expert commentaries and consumer opinion in different industries that use brown coal, is given below:
Ukraine may replace Russian gas with brown coal
Ukraine almost never uses its deposits of brown coal, although experts believe its the cheapest energy resource that can used to replace the imported Russian gas. The opposition see it as an opportunity to revive the coal industry, but the Energy Strategy of Ukraine does not even mention this resource. Public brown coal enterprises were liquidated, and now brown coal is produced only by private investors. But environmentalists fear that coal careers may destroy nature in Kharkiv and other regions, which have deposits of brown coal.
Brown coal is organic brown sediments that contain a lot of carbon, is easily crushed, and, which is highly important, lie near the surface. Its reserves in Ukraine are nearly two and a half billion tons and occupy a quarter of the territory of Ukraine.
But today Ukraine uses only one deposit, the Mokra Kalyhirka brown coal deposit in Cherkasy region, which is developed by the Energy Investment Company.
“Brown coal can be used at thermal power plants and heating power plants mixed with coal. It is also used for water-coal fuel and even diesel fuel production. Moreover, its price is only UAH200 per ton. Construction of a brown coal fired power plant near this deposit also has good prospects. Our neighboring countries have long been using lignite as fuel for households and industrial consumers. Germany, for examples, has recently opened a new brown coal power plant in Grevenbroich”, - says Yuliya Demtsova.
The Mokra Kalyhirka deposit already uses coal gasification equipment. However, the on-site technical gas is used only by the mining company. Its representatives claim that such gas can be sold to other consumers.
"Brown coal contains a lot of minerals and organic matters, i.e. humates”, - he the Director of the Zhyvytsya Company Oleksandr Oniskovtsev (production and sale of humate fertilizers). - Wheat and canola yield grew by 15-25 percent after adding humates from brown coal. This fertilizer is gradually replacing nitrates and phosphates”.
Last year several Ukrainian brick yards and boilers also switched to brown coal. One of them is the Teplo Company in Kamyantes-Podilskyi. Its Director Volodymyr Mykytyuk believes it to have more advantages than other fuels.
“Price and quality are most critical factors for us. Brown coal provides great advantages in heat production compared natural gas”, - says Mr. Mykytyuk…..
