Hydrocarbon Fuel. World Practices and Ukrainian Prospects

Ukraine has once again decided to reduce gas consumption. In mid-January, the Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Yuriy Boyko proposed a new plan, according to which Ukrainian TPPs are expected to switch  to coal-water fuel (WCF), which will save 6 billion cubic meters of scarce and expensive natural gas. Well, it can really become a suitable alternative for Ukraine because of its low cost and other benefits. However, given the experience of real application of this fuel in China, one should first consider a number of very important factors.

Liquid Coal
The history of coal-water fuel goes back to the middle of the XXth century. In the USSR, the first research in this area began in 1959, and from 1989 to 1993 there was a Belovo - Novosibirsk coal piple of 262 km in Russia used for coal-water fuel deliveries to Novosibirsk TPP-5 with four boilers.

Water-Coal Fuel
WCF is a suspension of finely ground (particle size should not exceed 200 microns) of coal and water in a ratio of about 55-70 to 45-30. Since this mixture quickly stratifies with deposition of coal particles, it is usually plasticized with a special substance with a mass fraction of s about 1%. In this form such fuel can be stored from 6 to 12 months, transported by road and rail tankers or pumped through pipelines...
