Ministry of Coal Predicts Production of 115 Million Tons of Coal in 2030

The Ministry of Energy and Mines decreased forecasts for coal production in Ukraine till 2030 by 15 million tonnes - up to 115 million tonnes a year, according to the draft update by the Energy Strategy of Ukraine till 2030.

“Production of coal in Ukraine can be increased to 115 million tonnes per year with simultaneous self-sufficiency and elimination of subsidies”, - said the draft strategy.
The current strategy assumes that coal production in Ukraine is to increase to 130 million tons per year by 2030.

In addition, the updated strategy assumes that production of steam coal will be around 75 million tonnes per year, which is enough to fully meet domestic demand from electric power industry and other customers”.

In January-April 2012, coal production in Ukraine increased by 7.3% - up to 28 million 929.6 thousand tons. In 2011, coal industry produced 81.8 million tons of coal, which is 8.8% more than last year.

During the last 15 years the level of coal production in Ukraine remained virtually unchanged, from 72 million to 83 million tons per year. In December 2010, the Ukrainian Coal Progrma expired, and the Program for Development of Coal Industry Till 2015 was developed. The Program foresees 91.7 million tons till 2015, including 63.5 million tons of steam coal. In 2015-2020, the volume is expected to increase to 100 million tonnes, including about 65 million tonnes of steam coal. The final potential level of production in 2030 is expected to reach 115 million tonnes, of which 75 million tonnes is steam coal.
