Turkey is Planning to Substitute Russian And Iranian Gas With Its Own Brown Coal

Turkey plans to substitute expensive Russian and Iranian gas with domestically produced brown coal. Turkey has signed a$12 billion agreement with the TAQA UAE that foresees lignite mining and construction of new power plants with a total capacity of up to 8 MW till 2020.

Imported gas a around 70% of energy needs of Turkey. The main supplier is the Russian Gazprom Company. However, the largets concerns deal with Iranian gas, since Iran faced international sanctions for deployment of its nuclear program. In addition, Iranian and Azerbaijani pipelines get regularly attacked by Kurdish separatists.

Iran provides 16% of Turkey's needs for gas, while Azerbaijan accounts for 15% of Turkish gas consumption.
