Ukraine Switches TPPs to Different Types of Coal, Including Lignite

Ukraine is going to switch six thermal power plants from gas to coal, according to the Prime Minister Mykola Azarov. “Even before the heating season 6 power plants were converted from gas to coal”, - said Azarov. He added that there is a feasibility study for another 5 TPPs.

The Prime Minister stressed that this way Ukraine is implementing a Program to reduce consumption of gas in order to minimize its import. In particular, he said, over past 7 months of 2012 Ukraine reduced gas consumption by almost 3 billion cubic meters compared to the same period in 2011. In addition, over the past last 7 months of 2012 Ukraine imported 12 billion cubic meters of gas less than over the same period of 2011. In August, there started development of the Mokra Kalyhirka brown coal deposits in Cherkasy region. Brown coal production is planned for September 2012.

The Prime Minister also said that Ukraine has recently signed a memorandum of cooperation with the China Development Bank to open a special line of credit for bringing in more than $ 3.5 billion for the project of coal gasification.

According to him, completion of the first 5 projects under this agreement will allow to reduce imports of natural gas by more than 3 billion cubic meters saving an average of $ 1.2 billion. It will also allow to save up to 150 million hryvnia of government spending by reducing compensation cost of gas for production of thermal energy to population, ensure a stable market for Ukrainian coal mines for 10 million tons of coal annually.

The Prime Minister said that recovery of coal industry has already begun. According to him, over the last 7 months of 2012 Ukraine produced more than 50 million tons of coal, which is 2.5 million tons or 6% more than over the same period of 2011.
