Ukraine Will Produce 50% of Its Energy From Coal, Including Lignite

In Ukraine, transition of TPPs to coal would allow to produce 50% of energy from coal, according to the Member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee in charge of the Fuel and Energy Complex Viktor Turmanov.

According to him, in 2013, almost all TPP are to be switched from gas to coal. As a result, coal will generate about 50 percent of energy.

The Energy Investment Company within the bounds of the working group of the Ministry had previously developed recommendations for application of a mixture of steam coal and lignite for Ukrainian TPPs. According to calculations, use of such a mix will decrease cost for fuel used by  an average of 25%.

At this point the Ukrainian government is planning to conduct effective modernization of mines to increase the pace of coal mining. Moreover, the first Ukrainian brown coal will be produced in October 2012 at the Mokra Kalyhirka field in the Cherkasy region.
